Conservation Through Green Building Design

Commercial and residential building energy consumption in the U.S. represents over 40 percent of total U.S. energy usage.  As such, any strategy for reducing the U.S.’s dependence upon foreign oil and fossil fuels needs to include significant improvements in building energy consumption.  Green building design reduces a building’s energy usage through a variety of strategies including passive and active solar, improved insultation materials, and recycling of construction materials.  To facilitate such green building design, the construction industry has developed a certification system known as LEED rating or certification which has different levels of certification for how “green” a building design is.
